The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is a Canadian government scholarship, which was named after Canadian first francophone Governor-general  Major-General Georges P. Application Process

Candidates must be recommended by the educational institution they wish to study abroad. Candidates cannot apply directly to the Vanier Canada Graduate School Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program. The Vanier CGS application package submitted via ResearchNet is first submitted to a Canadian institution for the recommendation. “Candidates should confirm the institution’s internal deadline with the nominating institution’s administrator.
Applicants must read the Selection Committee Guide before starting an application.

This guide lists three metrics and provides useful information on how to assess the criteria. The Banier Canada Graduate Scholarship Selection Committee is interdisciplinary and such applications should be prepared with non-expert researchers in mind. You should also read the Fairness, Diversity, and Inclusion pages before you start preparing or reviewing your application. To be eligible for funding, applicants must achieve an average grade of at least 3.1 on each of the three criteria.

General application process

  • Applications must be prepared, finalized and submitted by applicants using ResearchNet.
  • Any information that is not required or exceeds the page/character limits will be removed from the application prior to the review.
  • Applicants must preview all components of their application to ensure its completeness.
  • Applicants who wish to self-identify as an Indigenous (First Nation, Inuit and/or Métis) applicant to their Canadian institution may do so by completing the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship ( Vanier CGS) : Voluntary Self-Identification Form for Indigenous Applicants [ PDF (253 KB) ] and uploading it to their application. Please note that selection committee members will not be made aware of which applicants have self-identified as Indigenous (First Nation, Inuit and/or Métis).
  • The Vanier-Banting Secretariat cannot legally accept an application until the “Consent and Submit” task is completed on ResearchNet.

  • Format of documents: Refer to “Presentation standards for documents” for the required format. All attachments to your application must be prepared according to the standards provided. Applications submitted that are not prepared according to the instructions provided may be deemed ineligible.

Application Deadline

Institution Internal Deadlines: After identifying students in the institution’s ResearchNet proposed to obtain a Ph.D., additional deadlines will be displayed at the top of each page. This is the deadline for submitting an application to your institution via ResearchNet. This period is set and managed by each institution. No application can be submitted after this exact date and time.
Program Deadline: Institutions must submit their nominations to the Vanier CGS program by November 1, 2022 (8 pm Eastern Standard Time).

Eligibility

  • Canadian citizens
  • Permanent residents of Canada
  • Foreign citizens

To be Eligible, you must match the following criteria

  • • be nominated by only one Canadian institution, which must have received a Vanier CGS quotaFootnote1;
  • • be pursuing your first doctoral degree (including joint program such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., or JD/Ph.D. – if it has a demonstrated and significant research component);
  • • intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or a joint graduate research program such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) studies and research at the nominating institution;
  • • have completed no more than 20 months of full-time study in your doctoral program as of May 1, 2023;
    The doctoral program would begin after the completion of a Master’s degree. The months of study completed are calculated from the doctoral enrolment date.
  •  have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in your doctoral program (i.e., joint graduate research program, accelerated, previously enrolled without obtaining Master’s degree), by May 1, 2023, if:  Enrolled in a joint graduate research program, e.g., MD/PhD, MA/PhD, DVM/PhD. Applicants in this category have access to the 32-month window whether or not they were previously enrolled in a Master’s program, the months of study are calculated starting from the date on which an applicant is officially registered in the joint program (including the Master’s portion of the program).
  • Enrolled directly from a Bachelor’s to a PhD (not previously enrolled in a Master’s program); The months of study completed are calculated from the doctoral enrollment date.
  • Previously enrolled in a Master’s program without obtaining the degree, the months of study completed are calculated from the original Master’s enrollment date.
